About

Marieke Dench is a nationally recognised Australian artist. She has a Fine Arts Degree from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), a 1st Class Honours Degree in Fine Arts from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (R.M.I.T) and a Diploma in Education from the University of Melbourne (receiving the award for Practical Teacher of the Year).

Dench has successfully maintained a recognised arts practice in her own right, exhibiting nationally and internationally for almost 20 years.

The breadth of her practice is vast and includes painting, encaustic painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture and architectural installation.

Dench has a reputation for approaching two-dimensional material with a sculptor’s eye. Her works hover between the object and the description of an object and/or concept.

In general Dench never sets out to portray a direct copy of a place or concept. She instead uses aspects, or collages elements of her source material and ideas to create images with strict formal concerns. Her strong conceptual interests and deft hand bring a sculptural and inquisitive approach to picture making.

Dench’s ongoing interest in image making and how humans navigate through a diverse and wide range of situations and locales brings forth intellectually challenging and engaging works.

Dench has been the recipient of a Collie Trust Scholarship as well as winning a number of awards, including the Silk Cut Award and the Shell Fremantle Non-Acquisitive Print Award.

Her work is held in numerous Australian public and private collections and has undertaken major commissions in both of these sectors.

She has strong experience working with dealers, designers, collectors and architects on individual and large-scale commissioned works.

Dench has worked in the Visual Arts Departments of all Melbourne’s major and some interstate tertiary institutions: V.C.A., R.M.I.T., U.S.Q. and N.M.I.T. She is extremely well regarded in delivering art education of the highest quality.

She currently works full time at her inner Melbourne studio.
